Annabel Latham

Senior Lecturer, Manchester Metropolitan University

Dr Annabel Latham is a Senior Lecturer, Department of Computing and Mathematics at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. She is a Senior Member of the IEEE, the Chair of the IEEE UK & Ireland Women in Engineering Affinity Group, Chair of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Education Strategy Planning subcommittee and a UK STEM Ambassador.

Annabel’s research interests under the Computational Intelligence lab include (chatbots), user profiling, adaptive systems, intelligent tutoring systems, big data, text mining, agent intelligence and knowledge engineering. Recently she has focused on two key challenges: ethics and public trust in AI and developing AI systems for Education to improve access to, and support success in, personalised learning.

Annabel is passionate about promoting the power of computational intelligence and AI to improve our lives and enjoys discussing the benefits and ethical risks in her role as STEM ambassador through outreach work including invited talks, panel discussions, media articles, science festivals, school visits and organising events/boot-camps.

As Chair of IEEE Women in Engineering for UK and Ireland, her aim is to change the face of computer science by challenging stereotypes and promoting careers in computing and engineering to young girls and women. In 2019 WIE UKI won the IEEE Region 8 (Europe, Africa, Middle East) WIE group of the year award, bringing publicity and recognition to our work.
