Patrick de Mars

Senior Data Scientist, National Energy Systems Operator

Patrick is Senior Data Scientist in the AI Centre of Excellence at National Energy System Operator (NESO). His work focuses on using AI to enhance decision-making for engineers in the nation’s control room.
Before his current role at NESO, Patrick earned a PhD in reinforcement learning for electricity networks. He then became a Lecturer in Energy and Data at University College London (UCL), where his research centred on optimising power generation and implementing smart heating solutions in buildings through AI.
Following his tenure at UCL, Patrick joined UK Power Networks, contributing to the launch of the UK’s first independent Distribution System Operator. There, he played a pivotal role in developing short-term forecasting capabilities and modelling distributed energy resources.
